Recommended book to read if you have any Auto-Immune problems;
Wheat Belly written by William Davis, MD.
Here are some extracts from the book…
Auto-Immune problems occur when your immune system can no longer distinguish friend from foe. Like a mother not recognizing her children… what can happen is as tragic as friendly fire.
Auto-Immune symptoms depend on which tissues or organs are attacked. The Auto-Immune attack can show symptoms in many ways including: various forms of Alopecia (hair loss), hepatitis (liver tissue), biliary cirrhosis (bile ducts), type 1 diabetes (pancreatic cells), uveitis (iris of the eye), skin (psoriasis and eczema), platelets (thrombocytopenic purpura), muscles (polymyositis), thyroid (Hashimoto’s thyroiditis & Grave’s disease), and sadly can also effect any other organ or tissue.
Wheat consumption has now been identified in two processes of Auto-Immunity: the initiating process and as a perpetuating factor.
Auto-Immunity effecting digestion is the way the body tells us that “this food” does not agree with us and research shows it was never appropriate for human digestion. Wheat was first consumed @ 10,000 years ago. Prior to this, humans had not consumed grains for 2.5 million years. Wheat was altered post war by the efforts of geneticists and agribusiness and increased wheat consumption accounted for the increase of multiple Auto-Immune conditions; specifically type 1 diabetes, Hashimoto’s, inflammatory bowel disorders, alopecia (hair loss in patches or specific patterns) and other associated hair loss and scalp conditions such as folliculitis and pseudopleade.
Auto-Immune & Hair Loss by Trichologist Sydney. These are just some of the reasons modern day wheat can cause Auto-Immune responses in the body:
- Increased intestinal permeability
- Gliadin peptide toxicity
- Wheat germ agglutinin
- Molecular mimicry
- Dysbiosis
It is interesting to note that not one of these Auto-Immune responses require the presence of celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. It is the abnormal intestinal permeability induced by gliadin that develops in 80-90% of people and the toxic effects of wheat germ agglutinin can affect us all.
Anyone diagnosed with an Auto-Immune condition should really try to avoid wheat and its close genetically identical cousin rye and barley (identical gliadin and wheat germ agglutinin sequences), as well as corn (some overlap of corn zein with gliadin) and rice (identical wheat germ agglutinin).
Therapy for Auto-Immune problems should work along with vitamin D restoration (e.g., achieve a 25-hydroxy vitamin D level 150-180 nmol/L), omega-3 fatty acid supplementation, and correction of disrupted bowel flora (probiotics, naturally fermented foods, prebiotics). Taking on all of these steps maximizes hopes of controlling or reversing autoimmune conditions. [1]
